Context & objectives

The main goal of the several missions was to bring the skills of a local arts therapist to enhance the psychosocial support of children. The Red Pencil introduced art therapy as an alternative communication platform and helped facilitate the use of art materials for therapeutic purposes to encourage emotional expression. As such, the children were able to explore and express their inner world of emotions through a less threatening and meaningful way, with heart-warming memories to be kept for all.

The last mission played a slightly different role, as it followed a natural catastrophe. In 2018, following news of the deadly earthquake that had destroyed the lives and homes of many people in Lombok in August 2018, we reached out to the local villagers to help them cope with their traumatic experiences through arts therapy.

Impact

The main outcomes of this mission were to:

Have provided trauma healing to children following the Lombok earthquake and have trained caregivers of victims in basic art therapy skills through the Train-the-Trainer (TTT).

Through arts therapy, have achieved community building and restored hope among the children living in the small fishing village of Batu Bakit.
